We drove quietly through the highways and byways of San Diego. To Point Loma and the Fort Rosecrans national cemetery.
We were alone save for a few groundskeepers. And we walked in the quiet morning as the sun rose over the city's distant skyline. Many, many Americans have done great things. Since the birth of our nation. And now Evan knows...the price of duty. We even propped up a few flags that had fallen, heavy with dew.
Most kids slept in or watched cartoons. Instead, Ev got to see history, and learned respect in the process.
And then we drove away. And stopped for a donut. I sipped hot coffee in a styrofoam cup.
